Courtesy of NPR’s always engrossing Planet Money podcast, discussing inflation and the various factors that contribute to the rise of the costs of goods and services, pointedly discussing another sector—which I think should not be taken as letting those usual suspects, private equity and their ilk, off the hook for being caught holding the bag—pointedly discussing some of the pain points of veterinary medicine, we learn about prolific economics writer and namesake of the above effect in labour markets. In collaboration with economist and academic William Gordon Bowen (who also founded the digital library JSTOR), William Baumol (also a prolific sculptor and painter who helped create cultural economics, calling art collecting and patronage a gamble and presaging its fetishisation as an investment , evinced by these animal spirits) described the outcome of stagnant productivity countered with rising wages in certain sectors, which cannot innovate or advance on the same terms as other fields. Enterprises that rely on manufacturing and mass-production or mass-distribution for instance have benefited from technology that allows for automation and removing human labour from the picture. Other industry’s reliant on human expertise and interaction, like veterinarians, concert violinists, barbers, educators and carpenters, are unable to increase their output at scale. And while arguably some trades and professions—especially in the US, teacher—are not so richly compensated, their higher wages are sustained by cross-demand at the expense of profit because of their essential nature and lack of serviceable substitute. Furthermore unwillingness to offer competitive pay would led to a scarcity of expertise and prevents the greater misalignment that would come of no one entering these fields.

For some time, a local shop has been more visibly attempting to reduce spoilage by discounting perishable items about to expire with mark-downs, now adding “no to throwing me in the bin,” not only to reduce waste but also to keep food items out of landfills where it produces methane aside from taking up space, and so we appreciated this reporting from Spoon & Tamago about Family Mart, one of Japan’s largest konbini (コンビニ) franchises, a bodega or convenience shop, about its campaign to raise awareness and appeal consumer sympathy through an array of more emotive anthropomorphic characters, teary-eyed and asking for help.  Following trials that demonstrated shoppers were willing to help rotate stock and feedback from customers, the company rolled them out nationwide and made design template free for any one to use to cut waste in their own stores with the stickers. Though the US supreme court has during its shadow docket reliably sided with president, at least on a provisional basis, over the past several months, for the justices’ first properly vetted and argued case regarding the legality of Trump’s imposition of tariffs through a 1977 emergency powers act—not mentioning trade or embargo—is marked with scepticism and seemingly signals in the midst of the longest shutdown of the federal government and the Democrats winning several special elections a referenda on the hallmarks of Trump’s economic and foreign policy agendas, not to mention his style magisterial style of governance that has dulled the enumerated powers of the judiciary and legislature. Although much of the opening argument was given over to definitions, semantics and pragmatics and whether the major questions doctrine of the court, a statutory interpretation of the law that issues of major political or fiscal importance holding that congressional powers cannot be delegated to the executive—cited when clawing back the initiatives of student loan forgiveness under Joe Biden over the hundred billion dollar discharge though its applicability and precedent questioned over potentially trillions, the case does not address more fundamental questions whether tariffs are themselves an effective foreign policy tool privileged as they are over the regular channels of diplomacy and negotiation for attracting international investment and reshoring given the turmoil and chaos that such vacillations are inspiring, an productive instrument of national security for stemming drug-trafficking or even a constructive way of generating revenue for the treasury given that they are effectively a tax on US consumers—again the defence for the US government deflecting the scope of the case by saying that the monies made are “only incidental,” not convincing the panel of judges. Deliberations could take a month—rather swift by the court’s standards as the administration has demanded that this case be expedited.

The doo-wop single from the Billy Joel’s ninth studio album, An Innocent Man, inspired by the sound and energy of Frankie Valli’s Four Seasons and released late September climbed to the top of the UK charts on this day in 1983, holding the number one spot for five weeks—eventually displaced by “Karma Chameleon” one to become the best-selling song of the year. Conceived originally by his relationship, which Joel judged as asymmetrical, with supermodel Elle Macpherson, Uptown Girl ended up being about his new girlfriend and soon-to-be spouse Christie Brinkley. The music video portrays Joel (previously) and backup performers as blue collar auto mechanics presaged by footage of “Tell Her About It” shown on a portable television with a poster of Brinkley on the wall of the garage. “Keeping the Faith,” “All About Soul,” “River of Dreams,” “Leningrad” and “A Matter of Trust” were all dedicated to featured Joel’s wife, whereas as his amicable ex- has “And So it Goes” plus “This Night.” Predating them both, “Just the Way You Are” was written for his first wife and business manager Elizabeth Weber, who were against including the track on his 1977 album The Stranger, but was persuaded by Linda Ronstadt, whom was recording in a neighbouring booth in the same studio, sessions for Simple Dreams featuring “It’s So Easy” and “Blue Bayou.”

A long established fact about the US Patent Office is its signature agnosticism regarding submissions and filings, only the competent authority of whether a proposal can be trademarked and copyrighted “to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries” and not a judge of an idea’s quality or utility, though happy to collect registration fees, with any surplus above overhead operating costs being diverted to the general Treasury. Accordingly we appreciated this context-free gallery—via Things Magazine—of the figures and schematics (for applications recently submitted—see previously). There’s something that defaults to a little sinister when trying to surmise what’s being conveyed in this illustrations. Of course the details behind the pictures and prototypes can be easily and fully researched on the registry. Examiners, whilst specialists in their respective fields, are not necessarily lawyers, whereas trademark attorneys field work involving intellectual property.

Inspired by one-second clips of the whole of TOS, like Captain Picard said (S6:E25, Timescape, “He just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no one had a chance to interrupt—it was really quite hypnotic.” What’s your favourite out of context sound bite or scene? We are partial to “Star Base 12—your mother?” and Troi saying, “So you like horses for romance?”

Premiering in München on this day in 1925—though not released in the UK until the following April, the silent, joint Bavarian-British production The Pleasure Garden marked the directorial debut of Alfred Hitchcock, a cinematic adaptation of the 1923 melodrama by Oliver Sandys (one nom d’plume of Marguerite Florence Laura Jarvis who also wrote under the aliases of Countess Barcynska, Armiger Barley and others) about the misadventures of two chorus girls engaged by a theatre in London. Though the interview and audition of one young dancer, Jill—played by American import Carmelita Geraghty, is marred by a purse-snatching right before, she is taken in by a sympathetic member of the company, Patsy (Virginia Valli, another US actor) and ultimately lands a part. Initially a ménage à trois, a throuple Jill eventually succumbs to the overtures of aristocratic guests and leaves her benefactors, abandoning them in the time of the greatest need. Filmed principally in Germany and Lake Como, the movie was deemed too European and without redeeming qualities, hence the delay of it being screened in England and in America regarded as highly objectionable and unwholesome. Whilst not critically well received, one can see some of the motifs of Hitchcock’s later films storyboarded in the opening scenes, anticipating Vertigo, Rear Window and Family Plot.

Founded in 1898 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, the Fenton Label Company Incorporated specialised in commercial stickers, makers’ marks and gummed labels (see previously) and produced these wonderful sample sheets, like the pictured image from a 1940 catalogue, to advertise their range to potential clients. A wonderful graphic design and typological specimen, we can’t tell if all these North American businesses were actual brick-and-mortar shop fronts or were mock examples meant to demonstrate their printing possibilities but it proved to be a fun exercise to try to trace them down. The Hotel Barlum of Detriot did exist but it’s more of a challenge to track down the more generic brands, shops, services and agents and there are some choice vintage products to be found, such as non-poisonous salmon eggs, fruit tingle and something called original Canadian lotion. with National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger ousted to be replaced by Brent Scowcroft (though remaining Secretary of State), CIA director William Colby swapped for George H W Bush, Chief of Staff Jame Schlesinger dismissed in favour of Rumsfeld’s protégé Dick Cheney, Rogers Morton out as the Secretary of Commerce for Elliot Richardson, whose resignation during the Saturday Night Massacre precipitated the crisis of confidence that compelled Nixon to step down, and the vice-president (see above) announcing he would no long seek reelection on the ticket. The personnel changes were effective the next morning on election day, an off-year but Ford was very present already on the ballots in anticipation of the 1976 presidential race.

Missing this gift exchange during the last leg of Trump’s Asia in the chaos of last week—which netted no concrete trade deals other than a tepid tariff rapprochement with China—it seems in poor taste at first blush for South Korean president Lee Jae Myung to have presented the US president with a replica of an ancient gold crown, particularly right after the No Kings demonstrations, and bestowed on him the Grand Order of the Mugunghwa (Pink Hibiscus) and it’s of course pandering to his doltish vanities. A little low-effort research reveals, however, a possibly deeper meaning that’s half again cleverer than the copy of the birth certificate that Germany gave Trump of his ancestor who fled to avoid the draft and was subsequently stripped of his citizenship. Dating from the Silla dynasty (see previously) and designated among Korea’s National Treasures these delicate gold crowns, with the tensile strength of a tin-foil hat, which were discovered during an excavation of a royal tomb in the old capital city of Gyeongjuwere likely crafted as funerary wares and not to be worn by the living, due to their inherent flimsiness and impractical design, with this lavish headdress a burial good. That’s some apt diplomacy (see also), especially after the US deported all those South Korean workers.

A deacon originally from the Roman province of Africa, Caesarius began preaching the gospel to the poor of the ancient harbour town of Terracina along the Via Appia between Naples and Rome, accidentally arriving their after a shipwreck brought him providentially to a receptive audience, is feted on this day on the occasion of his martyrdom in year 107 AD. Critical of the long-standing pagan custom—“Alas for a state and emperors who persuade by tortures and are fattened on the outpouring of blood”—of this community under the direction of the priest of Apollo of choosing every first of January a sacrifice, a young man to be indulged all material delights and luxuriated for a span of eight months to become a fit propitiatory offering for the god and on the kalends of the ninth (novem), ceremonially regaled in finery and mounted on a generally recalcitrant steed, made to throw himself from the clifftop into the sea. For refusing to honour their patron and protector (though the pictured temple on the promontory is actually dedicated to Anxurus, a youthful avatar of Juno) and sowing heresy among the community, the priest of Apollo, Caesarius and a local presbyter called Julian were incarcerated and ultimately sentenced to the same fate as the sacrifice, without the pampering beforehand and unceremoniously bundled in a sack and flung off the mountain top. His name meaning “devotee of Caesar,” prompting his sainthood was seen by the early Church as a way of replacing the cult of emperors with their own pious servants—particularly after the daughter of Valentinian I Galla was healed after a visit to his shrine in the fourth century, translating some of his relics to Rome, building a basilica for them on Palatine Hill. With reference to his manner of death, Caesarius is the patron invoked against drowning and protector of Caesarean sections—though Galla would later die during childbirth. Bone fragments are preserved in churches throughout Italy and around the world, including Germany, the United States, the Philippines, Croatia and England.

Reported by Stop Podcasting Yourself’s Dave Shumka, we learn about the greatest French language seasonal song ever, written by language immersion teacher Matt Maxwell in Halifax to teach his young pupils about the then mostly exclusively Anglophone tradition and acquire some vocabulary in a fun way. Notwithstanding thematic and lyrical similarities to the Jack Skellington number from The Nightmare Before Christmas, a more modern carol but still losing out in terms of popularity—according to recent and perennial polling to Monster Mash among Americans at least (like “Dominick the Donkey” for the latter holiday), it’s still of a shouty banger. Although a word of foreign origin, the Office Québécois de la Langue Française still prescribes adding an article which leads to elision and a silent h.

First released in UK markets on this day in 1975 as the lead single from Queen’s fourth studio album (see previously), “Bohemian Rhapsody” quickly gained legendary status and became one of the most celebrated songs of all time. The symphonic journey, notable—for a pop song—for having no refrain and formal division with prelude, recitativo, progress rock interlude and epilogue, parodying the high art form in a skewering, bombastic manner that’s sort of brilliantly Italian brain rot—Galileo Figaro—Magnifico, a joke despite the underlying gravity of the personal lyrics. Having experimented with this type of composition previously with Mercury’s early work in “My Fairy King,” ambitions were greatly expanding during rigorous daily recording sessions for three weeks and multiple overdubs to achieve the right mix. Eschewed at first by radio stations because of its length the promotion video was quickly commission and aired on Top of the Pops within days. All special effects for the short were achieved live during the recording rather than editing in post-production, like the cascading effect caused by the visual feedback of pointing the camera at one of the studio monitors.

The preeminent series of annual alternating conferences organised by philanthropist and industrialist Ernest Solvay hosted in Brussels started in 1911 to address unsolved problems in physics, biology and chemistry, concluded its fifth and most notable session on this day in 1927, captured with this class photo (see also, referred to as the most intelligent picture ever taken) of attendees. With some tension over the participation of German scientists lifting, Albert Einstein, Max Born, Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg and Max Plank were able to join colloquia and workshops with Niels Bohr, Auguste Piccard, Paul Dirac, Marie-Skłodowska-Curie and others to explore the topics of electrons and protons, hammering out the finer details of the newly formulated discipline of quantum mechanics. The congresses continue (on the legacy of Solvay’s fortune derived from an improved process for carbonating beverages) to this day with latest iteration on biology in scheduled for next month with talks on the subject epigenesis.

As our faithful chronicler reminds, on this day in 1961—as news comes that Trump has directed his Department of War to resume nuclear testing partially in response to a successful trial by Russia of a submarine drone after a thirty-three year hiatus and will yield no benefit for America’s arsenal and only inflict more lasting environmental damage—the Soviet Union detonated the largest ever thermonuclear aerial weapon, codenamed Project Vanya, over Novaya Zemla, an arctic archipelago in the extreme northeast. Ordered by Secretary Khrushchev when the country quit the test ban moratorium (see previously) and timed to coincide with the gathering of the twenty-second Congress of the Communist Party. Four thousand times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and over three times the yield of the then largest US trial, Castle Bravo, carrying out the test garnered strong international condemnation and resulted in a partial nuclear test ban treaty at the instigation of Moscow and the chief scientist behind the programme. Confirming the theory that multistage charges could be calibrated with unlimited destructive power, neither side attempted to increase the scale for fear of creating a doomsday weapon. Though window panes were broken as far away as Finland and Norway from the seismic shock and anything within a hundred kilometres of ground-zero was annihilated, fallout was minimal and quickly dispersed with no consequences that would deter reoccupation.

neurodiversity (12. 835)

Whilst the term seemingly entered popular parlance with the COVID lockdown and gradual reemergence addressing the range of ways that people cope and adjust, neurodivergence originated in the late 1990s coined by then high school student Kassiane Asasumasu who went on to become a champion for autism rights and recognition, using in her AOL email signature line in forums for the autistic community. Not a clinical term, though often mistaken for one—as it also conflated with the title word, like the hapa-haole descriptor applied, unbidden, to her own multiethnic heritage that was imposed by Christian missionaries in Hawaiʻi uncomfortable with all the people who did not fit into their categories—it filled a lacuna that the above understanding of being within spectrum of dominant norms fell short of addressing, including those who deviated from accepted social bounds. Advocating for acceptance and pushing back on the idea that some outsiders have that such populations need to be readjusted, Asasumasu also later came up with the phrase caregiver benevolence to reframe best-intentions.

Discovered in 1916 by astronomer Grigori Nikolaevich Neujmin, one in a catalogue to his credit of hundreds of minor planets and comets, and named for the Crimean spa town near Yalta that was favoured by Neujmin’s contemporaries like Tolstoy and Gorky, the asteroid was visited by the Galileo space probe on a close fly-by on this day in 1991 en route for its mission to explore the Jovian system (see also), the first time such an object was encountered at close range and studied, the rendezvous a technically challenging one since only its approximate location was known by projecting its orbital path. After a pause of more than three year after the discovery of the undisturbed burial chamber, the mummified remains of Tutankhamun were discovered on this day in 1925 by Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team. Over three thousand years after his death, the king is notably the only mummy yet found completely intact and with no sign of tampering and despite the famous find and iconic nature of his gold and lapis lazuli death mask, very little is known about the individual’s circumstances or cause of death, other than a reign of about a decade dedicated to undoing the much the cultural and religious reforms enacted by his predecessor and father Akhenaten and expiring only as a young adult, hence referred to a the boy-king. Laid to rest in a series of nested coffins which we carefully opened to reveal the golden sarcophagus—the headdress crafted to give him the likeness of the god Osiris. Inlaid with faience and precious stones, the back of the mask is inscribed with a chapter from the Book of the Dead, a collection of creation and resurrection texts, spells and incantations used in funerary rituals. Studied forensically for nearly a year, the body was indelicately separated from the gold coffin and reinterred within one of the larger ones and stays in repose in Luxor in the Valley of the Kings. Although contributing much to public awareness of the field of archaeology, Tutankhamun’s treasures and alleged curse—published and propaganda in the following decades, turned out to be more captivating than his mortal remains.

Via Boing Boing we are directed to a rather blatant display of christo-fascist propaganda (generated by AI of course but with typical machine wokeness filtered out and the implicit message baked-in) in a series of US government sanctioned advertisements from Trump’s labour department recruiting campaign, encouraging the white and male, virility virtually without exception despite some tokenism and a few women and darker-complected individuals appearing as subordinates and somehow more dated and fantastical in this Norman Rockwell vision that’s far from just benighted in its subtext, to skill-up and enter into apprenticeship programmes, as the acolytes did who propped up the president himself and saved him from television obscurity and his own deserved reputation as a bad businessman. No second glance is necessary to recognise the message not as some retro-styled call to action but rather as erasure of the reality of the populace that drives America and cued into the same aesthetics and ideals of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda of Joseph Goebbels.

Featured in full on Spitalfield’s Life, we found this abecedary by illustrator Marion Elliot of folklore and superstition to be an absolute delight whose risograph alphabet on exhibit is perfect for the height of the spooky season. 

From the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance to the Cornish legend of the Mermaid of Zennor, with everything in between ranging from sin-eaters, corn dollies and The Wicker Man (see previously here and here). 

Adopt a letter and research further into the custom or myth each panel represents, but be cautious as these collections were not only regarded as didactic aides by the clergy, it was also believed that the alphabet possessed supernatural powers itself.

giorno poetry systems (12. 829)

Courtesy of Weird Universe, not only do we learn about the public multimedia experiment (see also here, here and here) started by artist and activist John Giorno in 1968—initially introduced as an installation before being deaccessioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York after complains over its catalogue being weighted towards counter-cultural polemics and a subsequent FBI investigation into potentially subversive language before retreating into different iterations and media, we learn that the service is still active and one can dial-a-poem—or visit the its web presence for a random selection (or with directory assistance per app), sourced from the original exhibit (collaborating with John Cage, Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs, Patti Smith and others) with many more contributors added in the decades since.

As for other authors of the genre, the business of world building is a key first step, and no exception for godmother of high fantasy-fiction Ursula K LeGuin (previously here and here) who meticulously charted out her complex, layered narratives before populating them with her characters. Along the same lines as Le Guin’s pithy quote about how people who deny the existence of dragons are often eaten by them—“from within”—mapping out her domains has an immediate impact: “I saw and named Earthsea and all its islands.
