Reported by Stop Podcasting Yourself’s Dave Shumka, we learn about the greatest French language seasonal song ever, written by language immersion teacher Matt Maxwell in Halifax to teach his young pupils about the then mostly exclusively Anglophone tradition and acquire some vocabulary in a fun way. Notwithstanding thematic and lyrical similarities to the Jack Skellington number from The Nightmare Before Christmas, a more modern carol but still losing out in terms of popularity—according to recent and perennial polling to Monster Mash among Americans at least (like “Dominick the Donkey” for the latter holiday), it’s still of a shouty banger. Although a word of foreign origin, the Office Quรฉbรฉcois de la Langue Franรงaise still prescribes adding an article which leads to elision and a silent h.

c’est l’halloween (12. 841)
a night at the opera (12. 840)
First released in UK markets on this day in 1975 as the lead single from Queen’s fourth studio album (see previously), “Bohemian Rhapsody” quickly gained legendary status and became one of the most celebrated songs of all time. The symphonic journey, notable—for a pop song—for having no refrain and formal division with prelude, recitativo, progress rock interlude and epilogue, parodying the high art form in a skewering, bombastic manner that’s sort of brilliantly Italian brain rot—Galileo Figaro—Magnifico, a joke despite the underlying gravity of the personal lyrics. Having experimented with this type of composition previously with Mercury’s early work in “My Fairy King,” ambitions were greatly expanding during rigorous daily recording sessions for three weeks and multiple overdubs to achieve the right mix. Eschewed at first by radio stations because of its length the promotion video was quickly commission and aired on Top of the Pops within days. All special effects for the short were achieved live during the recording rather than editing in post-production, like the cascading effect caused by the visual feedback of pointing the camera at one of the studio monitors.

congrรจs solvay (12.838)

The preeminent series of annual alternating conferences organised by philanthropist and industrialist Ernest Solvay hosted in Brussels started in 1911 to address unsolved problems in physics, biology and chemistry, concluded its fifth and most notable session on this day in 1927, captured with this class photo (see also, referred to as the most intelligent picture ever taken) of attendees. With some tension over the participation of German scientists lifting, Albert Einstein, Max Born, Erwin Schrรถdinger, Werner Heisenberg and Max Plank were able to join colloquia and workshops with Niels Bohr, Auguste Piccard, Paul Dirac, Marie-Skลodowska-Curie and others to explore the topics of electrons and protons, hammering out the finer details of the newly formulated discipline of quantum mechanics. The congresses continue (on the legacy of Solvay’s fortune derived from an improved process for carbonating beverages) to this day with latest iteration on biology in scheduled for next month with talks on the subject epigenesis.

As our faithful chronicler reminds, on this day in 1961—as news comes that Trump has directed his Department of War to resume nuclear testing partially in response to a successful trial by Russia of a submarine drone after a thirty-three year hiatus and will yield no benefit for America’s arsenal and only inflict more lasting environmental damage—the Soviet Union detonated the largest ever thermonuclear aerial weapon, codenamed Project Vanya, over Novaya Zemla, an arctic archipelago in the extreme northeast. Ordered by Secretary Khrushchev when the country quit the test ban moratorium (see previously) and timed to coincide with the gathering of the twenty-second Congress of the Communist Party. Four thousand times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and over three times the yield of the then largest US trial, Castle Bravo, carrying out the test garnered strong international condemnation and resulted in a partial nuclear test ban treaty at the instigation of Moscow and the chief scientist behind the programme. Confirming the theory that multistage charges could be calibrated with unlimited destructive power, neither side attempted to increase the scale for fear of creating a doomsday weapon. Though window panes were broken as far away as Finland and Norway from the seismic shock and anything within a hundred kilometres of ground-zero was annihilated, fallout was minimal and quickly dispersed with no consequences that would deter reoccupation.

neurodiversity (12. 835)
Whilst the term seemingly entered popular parlance with the COVID lockdown and gradual reemergence addressing the range of ways that people cope and adjust, neurodivergence originated in the late 1990s coined by then high school student Kassiane Asasumasu who went on to become a champion for autism rights and recognition, using in her AOL email signature line in forums for the autistic community.  Not a clinical term, though often mistaken for one—as it also conflated with the title word, like the hapa-haole descriptor applied, unbidden, to her own multiethnic heritage that was imposed by Christian missionaries in Hawaiสปi uncomfortable with all the people who did not fit into their categories—it filled a lacuna that the above understanding of being within spectrum of dominant norms fell short of addressing, including those who deviated from accepted social bounds. Advocating for acceptance and pushing back on the idea that some outsiders have that such populations need to be readjusted, Asasumasu also later came up with the phrase caregiver benevolence to reframe best-intentions.

Discovered in 1916 by astronomer Grigori Nikolaevich Neujmin, one in a catalogue to his credit of hundreds of minor planets and comets, and named for the Crimean spa town near Yalta that was favoured by Neujmin’s contemporaries like Tolstoy and Gorky, the asteroid was visited by the Galileo space probe on a close fly-by on this day in 1991 en route for its mission to explore the Jovian system (see also), the first time such an object was encountered at close range and studied, the rendezvous a technically challenging one since only its approximate location was known by projecting its orbital path. The irregular shaped silicate-rich asteroid is approximately the size of Guam and has the pictured astronomical symbol, a simplification of the resort town’s coat of arms.

After a pause of more than three year after the discovery of the undisturbed burial chamber, the mummified remains of Tutankhamun were discovered on this day in 1925 by Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team. Over three thousand years after his death, the king is notably the only mummy yet found completely intact and with no sign of tampering and despite the famous find and iconic nature of his gold and lapis lazuli death mask, very little is known about the individual’s circumstances or cause of death, other than a reign of about a decade dedicated to undoing the much the cultural and religious reforms enacted by his predecessor and father Akhenaten and expiring only as a young adult, hence referred to a the boy-king. Laid to rest in a series of nested coffins which we carefully opened to reveal the golden sarcophagus—the headdress crafted to give him the likeness of the god Osiris. Inlaid with faience and precious stones, the back of the mask is inscribed with a chapter from the Book of the Dead, a collection of creation and resurrection texts, spells and incantations used in funerary rituals. Studied forensically for nearly a year, the body was indelicately separated from the gold coffin and reinterred within one of the larger ones and stays in repose in Luxor in the Valley of the Kings. Although contributing much to public awareness of the field of archaeology, Tutankhamun’s treasures and alleged curse—published and propaganda in the following decades, turned out to be more captivating than his mortal remains.

blue collar boom (12. 831)

Via Boing Boing we are directed to a rather blatant display of christo-fascist propaganda (generated by AI of course but with typical machine wokeness filtered out and the implicit message baked-in) in a series of US government sanctioned advertisements from Trump’s labour department recruiting campaign, encouraging the white and male, virility virtually without exception despite some tokenism and a few women and darker-complected individuals appearing as subordinates and somehow more dated and fantastical in this Norman Rockwell vision that’s far from just benighted in its subtext, to skill-up and enter into apprenticeship programmes, as the acolytes did who propped up the president himself and saved him from television obscurity and his own deserved reputation as a bad businessman. No second glance is necessary to recognise the message not as some retro-styled call to action but rather as erasure of the reality of the populace that drives America and cued into the same aesthetics and ideals of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda of Joseph Goebbels.

Featured in full on Spitalfield’s Life, we found this abecedary by illustrator Marion Elliot of folklore and superstition to be an absolute delight whose risograph alphabet on exhibit is perfect for the height of the spooky season.
From the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance to the Cornish legend of the Mermaid of Zennor, with everything in between ranging from sin-eaters, corn dollies and The Wicker Man (see previously here and here). Adopt a letter and research further into the custom or myth each panel represents, but be cautious as these collections were not only regarded as didactic aides by the clergy, it was also believed that the alphabet possessed supernatural powers itself.

familiar in his mouth as household words (12. 821)
Occurring on this day (the feast of St Crispin’s) in 1415 in the fields in the fields outside of Azincourt in north France, the decisive and surprise English victory, out-numbered by troops of the opposition marked a turning point in the Hundred Years’ War (Guerre de Cent Ans), humiliating France and boosting the morale of England, leading to the latter’s dominance in the protracted conflict over the duchy of Aquitaine and French throne (see previously here and here) for the next fourteen years—until English defeat during the Siege of Orlรฉans. Henry V re-invaded France in the spring of the same year after negotiations with French court fell apart, with the English king asserting his claim to the kingdom of France through his great-grandfather Edward III—arguably the heir through his mother, Isabella, sister of the last Capetian monarch, Charles IV, but French Salic Law excluded matrilineal succession. For the past couple of iterations of this dispute, the English king would relent and back off the claim provided the French acknowledged English dominion over Aquitaine, Calais and other territories. Henry, however, demanded in exchange for renouncing the crown, a generous dowery for his marriage to Charles VI’s daughter, Catherine of Valois, a literal king’s ransom (payment in arrears for the release of John II—Jean le Bon—held as a hostage in London a century before) and in addition to the settled lands, Anjou, Brittany and Normandy as well. Although France was ready to make some concessions to the deal, it proved to be too bad of a bargain, especially since England had little to leverage—other than squandering peace and stability—and a series of pitched battles commenced, stretching out, with periods of interruption due to plague and other factors, for a hundred and sixteen years. Despite the ultimate loss of continental territory and the rejection of a joint monarchy that saw the rejection of all things French and vice versa (English becoming the official language and French no longer used in court and the classroom), the monarchy of England and Great Britain styled themselves sovereigns of France until 1802, the end of the French Revolution.

With a mission to curate a vanishing aesthetic referred to as millennial or Chinese dreamcore—nostalgic but a bit mordant with the energy of moribund malls, architecture student Liu Yujia has crisscrossed the country on foot, bike and train documenting the building boom of the 1990s and 2000s that echoed the beginning of the era of economic prosperity and unprecedented growth as told through vernacular towers, industrial parks and ageing apartment blocks dismissed by many as ostentatious and ugly, with little regard afforded for their demolition as relics of China’s rise, cleared away to make room for more growth and development. Liu’s catalogue is focused on some ten-thousand structures already slated for the wrecking-ball, hoping to create an archive of these high-rise enclaves that were once important symbols of China’s ambitions for progress. More from Sixth Tone at the link above.

Via Strange Company, we appreciated the chance to revisit a divisive, geometrically confounding interior design trend of the tiered- or sunken living room. Invented by architect Bruce Goff and championed by the likes of Eero Saarinen and others, these intimate spaces enjoyed a cosmopolitan popularity from the late 1950s to late 1970s as sectional venues for social gatherings and while out of fashion and mostly the subflooring has been covered over with renovations, some choice conversation pits have been preserved. Pictured is another view from inside the 1958 Miller House of Columbus Indiana by Saarinen (see above) with designer Alexander Girard—now preserved as a historical site of the industrialist’s commission for a “very, very modern home.” More from Mental Floss at the link above.

As the shutdown of the US federal government drags on and Donald Trump appears far more interested in razing the White House (check out the major events timeline), betraying the ranching community that voted him back in office by touting Argentinian beef over domestically sourced (added to the bailout of the peso to ensure that the Trump crime family has a safe space for exile like Nazis in hiding) and uncharacteristically, charitably silent for a few hours perhaps embarking on another Weekend at Bernie’s, Washington and Ontario have suspended trade talks over an advertisement aired on social media at the behest of the province’s premier which excerpted a portion of a 1987 speech by Ronald Reagan denouncing tariffs—counter-programming a series ran by Trump lauding their supposed benefits. Insisting that Reagan’s quote that “trade barriers hurt every American worker” was taken out of context and politicised (messaging also used by China), Marco Rubio, the secretary of state—charged with diplomacy but focused on economic issues and destabilising the government of Venezuela and who pointedly during the 2016 Republican primary debates called tariffs a tax on the American people—announced that negotiations have been put on hold, later echoed by the US president, calling the ad fake and fraudulent and declaring talks “hereby terminated.” Moreover the a group called the Reagan Foundation cried foul over the misrepresentation and is exploring legal options against Canada—to which Ontario released an extended version of the address—in the public domain—to differentiate it from Trump’s AI slop and distortions. This derailment comes ahead of the mandated six year reassessment of the NAFTA redux negotiated by Trump and the announcement of the Canadian federal budget, expected to emphasise a pivot away from reliance on its neighbour to the south.

On this day in 1975, Icelandic women—some ninety percent of the demographic that makes up half of the population, went on strike for twenty-four hours for a showing of the indispensable place of women for the economy and society, organisers touting the action to protest wage disparity (a pay-gap of around sixty-percent less compared to male coworkers in the same profession) and unfair employment practises as Women’s Day Off. Participants called out of their jobs outside the home and also refused to do the added tasks of housekeeping or activities associated with child-rearing, many husbands having to do these chores for the first time. Whilst the international attention for the demonstration prompted legislative reforms and equal rights, the struggle continues half a century on and there have been other mass walk-outs (see also) and on the Friday closest to the anniversary, women are dismissed early, incrementally later commensurate with the progress made towards their goals from 14:05, 14:08, 14:25 and most recently 14:38 to quit at a time when they could have earned their daily wage had they been paid the same as men—the World Economic Forum’s global gender-gap index rating Iceland the most egalitarian country for the past sixteen years. Much more from Reykjavรญk Grapevine at the link up top.

Much in the same vein as these previous collected aphorisms can be a good sounding-board for creative thinking, so to is this form of storyboarding with the major and minor arcana as presented by filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (see previously here and here) is a heuristic for self-discovery in the present rather than prognostication and his own narrative style of magical-realism. There’s an element of magical-thinking of course but things can sometimes manifest through insight. More from Open Culture at the link above.

project west ford (12. 812)
Though we’ve wrote quite a few times on the rather audious joint US Airforce-Massachusetts Institute of Technology mission (see previously here and here) to ensure the continuity of communications in the era before satellites in case of Soviet sabotage on underseas cables by seeding the upper atmosphere with a half a million copper dipoles to create an artificial ionosphere, the natural but unpredictable one being the primary sounding board for international correspondence via shortwave, we think the story bares repeating on the anniversary not of the deployment of the payload of “Westford needles” but rather on date that the first abortive experiment failed in 1961.
After the initial set-back, it’s amazing that there was another trial.  Hundreds of thousands of tiny copper pins, thinner than a human hair (scaled to amplify target signals) in orbit would, as the theory went, would form a ring to collective provide passive support to a parabolic transmission dish located on the grounds of MIT’s multidisciplinary observatory. Carried aloft in tandem with the launch of a MiDAS 4 satellite the diodes failed to disperse. A second attempt in May the following year was successful. Though unknown at the time how quickly the needles would deorbit and that the debris field was temporary and diminishingly small, the secret experiment enraged the international community and although the fears of the a catastrophic grounding were unfounded, Project West Ford did prompt an inclusion of a consultation provision in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

Via the latest link round-up (all on the theme of needlework and knitting) by fellow internet peripatetic Messy Nessy Chic, we are referred to this cosy archive of embroidered kneeling cushionssourced from the pews of various congregations around Cornwall.

Inspired by a visit to the parish church of Saint Breage (a nun and missionary under Saint Brigid) and surrounding villages and noticing the tuffets—genuflexoria, the collection records not only Bible stories and local legends but also instil a sense of community featuring details about the lives of parishioners.
We wonder if there’s a scramble as services begin to claim one’s favourite—kneelers a sixteenth century invention as genuflecting was not part of the liturgy, spurred on by the Protestant Reformation and calls for regular and permanent furnishings, until then but until the mid-twentieth century it was common practise in Anglican churches to rent pews to seatholders, raising money for the diocese and as a show of social standing when on one’s knees.
