Via Web Curios we learn about a clever browser extension (along with a suite of similar incognito tools) sponsored by UNESCO that is designed to reveal the subjectivity of one’s tailored and idiosyncratic experience online by inviting one to adopt a range of personae that influences the direction and tone of one’s directed advertising and anticipation in inscrutable ways (see also) that the user would have no way of knowing was markedly different than the underpinnings presented to someone else.  While we may not be able to exactly remove the blinders, we can at least perhaps be attuned to different pitches, perspectives.

Via Kottke we are directed to a highly compelling project from Dillon Marsh that visualises mines in South Africa with a scale model representing the specie, minerals or gemstones extracted from it—like in this composite photograph of the Jubilee Mine in the Namakwa District and the sixty-five-hundred tonnes of copper ore dug from the Earth. Gains seem particularly marginal, inefficient and pathetic in comparison to all the hardships in cost of human toil and exploitation and environmental damage. More at the links above.

Originally designed to transport Buran orbiting vehicles in the mid-1980s, the strategic airlift cargo plane, Antonov AN-225 ‘Мрія’ (Inspiration) was a unique aircraft boasting the greatest weight of any flight-worthy piece of equipment and longest wingspan. Aside from its impressive capacity (the hold at 44 meters in length could contain the first flight of the Wright Brothers at Kittyhawk), there were proposals to retrofit the plane as a mid-air launch pad. The freight vehicle only which saw commercial applications aside from a single test-flight in 1989 with the space shuttle, drawing many spectators to watch its scheduled take-offs and landings, was destroyed in its hangar at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine during the battle for Antonov Airport outside of Hostomel.

Our gratitude to the aptly recursive and veteran podcast Stop Podcasting Yourself (previously) for the viewing recommendation in the ambitious and acclaimed Canadian sci-fi series from author Harlan Ellison (as Cordwainer Bird) and featuring the adaptions of stories of Ursula K Le Guin, Arthur Heinemann and others which despite the trappings of low production-value is genuinely intriguing and compels one to watch more. Starring Keir Dullea from 2001: A Space Odyssey and only lasting for a single season in 1973, the sixteen episode arc of The Starlost is set in a multigenerational colonial ship of dozens of connected biospheres in the late twenty-fourth century of Earthling refugees seeking a new home after the destruction of their own.

Coinciding with the intensified fighting of the Transnistrian conflict that marked the beginning of the Moldo-Russian war between Russian supported separatists and pro-union Moldovan military and police forces, that country along with San Marino and fellow former Soviet republics Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan join the United Nations on this day in 1992 during the forty-sixth session of the General Assembly.
