opus 214

Composed during a successful summer concert series touring Russia, Johann Strauss (often printed with an Eszett, รŸ, though he wrote his name with a long-s and a rounded, terminal s--Strauลฟs) the Younger's Tritsch-Tratsch polka (German for chit-chat and referencing the obsession for gossip among otherwise polite society) had its premiere performance at Viennese guesthouse Zum groรŸen Zeisig on this day in 1858. This jaunty piece is among a repertoire of over five-hundred waltzes, quadrilles and other dance numbers written and arranged by Strauss.
