Reopened and touted as a family friendly tourist attraction, the Hellfire Caves outside the village of West Wycombe are a a series of artificial caverns excavated at the behest of Francis Dashwood, the 11. Baron le Despencer (the second Post-Master General) in the mid 1700s as a meeting location for its membership of the exclusive, eponymous club for high society rakes, whose rolls included portrait artist William Hogarth (whom painted many fellow members but did not, as far as is known, document any of their activities) John Montagu, 4. Earl of Sandwich, satirist Paul Whitehead and American statesman Benjamin Franklin. Though difficult to ascertain the truth behind rumours of devil worship and orgies, it does seem that debauchery shielded from public inspection or judgement took place underground, and from the statuary in the chalk alcoves, suggests a strong element of pagan rituals, Hercules and the Nemean Lion, Bacchus and Venus also featured prominently. Locals generally respected their privacy for their lord’s munificence and the project having employed many during a time of poor harveststhe crated away material used also for road construction. Dashwood adopted for the group’s motto Fais ce que tu voudras—the mission statement associated with the fictional abbey of Thélème of Rabelais, later taken up by Aleister Crowley as “Do what thou wilt.” Just a short excursion from the capital, there are hand-hewn galleries named after associates Sandwich and Franklin and the Inner Temple with more details and a guided tour from Londonist’s Matt Brown at the link up top.

Via Super Punch (an AI roundup with more stories to explore), we are directed to a cautionary tale about wearables, the Internet of Things and shoe-horning unwanted artificial intelligence into everything from a 2012 with an IT company creating the proverbial accessory that the Livejournal post explicitly warned against making, unearthing the cursed talisman buried within a horde of real treasures, enough to make one overlook the Monkey’s Paw of a trinket. It begins with the disclosure, “Better for you if you take me off,” which of course the wearer ignores instead of tossing it into the fires of Mount Doom. Parasitically attached and knowing its host’s predilections all too well, the earring—like a shoulder devil—offers not the best advice but rather the oft-times sabotaging yet infallible confirmation that will lead to instant gratification, prefaced with the same “Better for you…” at the expense of long term goals, although in the estimation of their peers, most successful and contented.

circle star theatre (13. 177)

First broadcast on Valentine’s Day in 1973—though I seem to have a distinct memory of this made for TV movie, actually the feature length pilot of an unsold comedy series, perhaps with some Mandela Effect factoring in—the would-be satanic sit-com with Sammy Davis Jr and Christopher Lee revolves around a bungling demon vying for a promotion and trying to earn his horns by convincing a hapless San Francisco accountant (played by Jack Klugman) to enter into a Faustian bargain, a sort of reverse premise of It’s a Wonderful Life. Despite the prospect of instant wealth and an albeit temporary temporal existence with luxury and security, the account has a last minute change of heart and retains his immortal by a technical breach in the contract. The project was inspired by Davis’ own membership in the Church of Satan, ceremonially elevated to the rank of honorary warlock second degree shortly after Poor Devil first aired.  Clips from Dangerous Minds at the link up top.

It’s always going to be a hard slog picking out those highlights and nadirs of trending topics that gained a lasting—or at least defining—purchase on the past twelve months, but we nonetheless appreciated this albeit highly Anglo-centric and non-controversial assortment of virality that we made didn’t have the tolerance or time for when they presented themselves and mostly receded from public purview. A mix of marketing and memes, the Blue Origin flight to the edge of space with Katy Perry, Gayle King, Aisha Bowe (former rocket scientist), civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn and Jeff Bezos’ then-fiancee Lauren Sánchez and the Labubu phenomenon—a reprise of the Beanie Baby craze with a much protracted trajectory—was the hardest to ignore, with the latter though claiming to draw from Nordic folklore, specifically admitting to be a knock-off of the good luck trolls (Gjøltrold), and free from occult practises, more than one polity has banned the collectible over concerns that the familiars could influence children into summoning demons and has been associated with the Mesopotamian malevolent deity Pazuzu (𒀭𒅆𒊒𒍪𒍪), mainly over the similarly snarled expression and the blind-box nature of the spirit, protective but unpredictable, and whose likeness was a popular amulet of the ancient civilisation. We could well relate to Beyoncé’s incredulous reaction to her long overdue Grammy win, however.

The parallel construction triangulates with a lecture series by tech oligarch Peter Thiel embracing the language of the apocalypse—rebuffing, redirecting worries over AI godhead with talks that appeal to particularly American obsessions of naming the Antichrist and belief in angels and demons (environmental activist Greta Thunberg is a favourite target of the influential billionaire for the Great Satan—in the parlance and policing of y’all Qaeda) and the censoring of media outlets with producer son David of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison looking to acquire CNN after taking over Paramount-Skydance with consequences already apparent, Trump’s Federal Communications Commission bullying ABC-Disney into cancelling another popular late night talk show critical of the administration, the divestiture of US TikTok to a MAGA cadre to transform it into a propaganda mill far worse than any hand wringing over China, and the Washington Post dismissing a veteran journalist for reporting the news and calling out sophistry.

Having been previously exposed to a select body of work from the underground filmmaker whose short pieces experiment of themes of the surreal, the occult and homoeroticism, we appreciated this rare glimpse of Kenneth Anger at work through this 1970 documentary from Reinold E Theil for the German network Westdeutsche Rundfunk, featuring segments of his Magick Lantern series and the filming of cut scenes for Lucifer Rising on location at the Avebury Stones. Although seemingly a recalcitrant and reluctant interviewee, Anger was grateful to WDR and the British Film Institute for grants that made the project possible. Walking the opposite direction along the shore front Moulin des Oies from the campground, we first came to the dolmen known as Boccénic Vras (the geese-mill) on an outcropping, one of a few remaining prehistoric megalithic structures which were formerly as numerous as the preserved Carnac Stones not far from here but many of the granite monuments were used for construction material for lighthouses and churches, continuing through the habour and to the island of Welsh holy man Cardoc (Enez Kado), whose remote hermitage became a monastery during the high Middle Ages.

The rather remarkably engineered dike bridge connecting it to the mainland predates that period and was, according to legend, built by the devil in the course of one night. For his troubles, Satan claimed the first soul to cross—for which the saint volunteered but threw a black car onto the bridge at the last minute. About a hundred architectural marvels in France have the same demonic attribution.

Credited with the founding of many churches and abbeys throughout Breton, Cornwall and Scotland, Cado / Cardoc is fêted on 21 September (bay-dee-ya) and his Norman-era vita is considered one document that independently corroborates the historicity of the figure of King Arthur—prayed to for intervention for glandular issues and deafness. The church and supporting village was chiefly a fishing community and the monumental cavalry (see previously) dates from 1832 and the very photogenic Maison de Nichtarguér, an 1894 construction built for the caretaker of an oyster farm.

Having previously looked at other visual language compliers expressed through artistic elements and other than the usual strings of functions and conditions of coding, and very much reenforces overdue acknowledgement that the jargon of computing can act as a gatekeeper and that unnatural language can create an out-group (see also) for whom these incantations seem like wizardry, and given our preoccupation with secret signs, we were very much
intrigued by this mystical platform of magic circles, via Clive Thompson’s latest Linkfest (a lot more to explore there) under development by Denis M Moskowitz. The sampled, quicksort spell is a rendering of the Euclidean algorithm for calculating the greatest common divisor of two numbers—that which divides them both without a remainder—a benchmark test for the logic of a new programming language with an intuitively visual component. Moskowitz has also created a character set of glyphs or monograms after the chaos magic of Austin Osman Spare (previously here and here) whose seals unlock the basic grammar of coding. Popular and widely employed during Greco-Roman times well into the Christian era, curse tablets (κατάδεσμος—a binding spell) were often discretely or surreptitiously buried with the dead to settle a grudge with surviving competitors over business and romantic affairs and even among rival sports teams as a way to petition the chthonic gods or place spirits to compel malediction for the after life. Like the cache of twenty-two curses recently discovered in an ancient cemetery near Orleans, the most common media was thin lead scrolls as due to their malleability could be easily inscribed and were also an element associated with the underworld deities. What makes this particular discover unique is that one grave contained a curse written in Gaulish, the vulgar language of the region in common parlance (though really preserved in written form) for centuries after the Roman conquest. Because of the paucity of documentation for Gallo-Roman translating is a challenge but there is a another class of curse tablets called Voces mysticae (vox magica) which do not seem to be rendered in any known language and are a secret invocation that only demons can decipher—with scholars teasing out palindromes (previously here and here) and boustrophedon. Having encountered the topic of animals on trial beforehand, we found intriguing this court docket, via ibīdem, on how canine familiars (obviously falsely accused, they were all good boys and girls) were implicated in the Salem Witch Trials. In superstitions predating the tribunal dogs had garnered associations with the sinister and while there are no records of dogs standing trial, those folklore traditions echo in testimony with dogs being bewitched and in league with the devil, evinced by the power of prayer to encourage obedience. Historical sources suggest that their implication was a shaggy dog story read into the record after the fact and sadly led, as with their feline and feminine cohort, to abuse and injustice.

summis desiderantes (12. 058)

From the Latin incipit “for desiring with supreme ardor” (see previously, see also), Pope Innocent VIII promulgated his papal bull on this day in 1484 condemning witchcraft, issued at the behest of one Dominican Inquisitor called Heinrich Kramer, who would go on to publish the widely popular Malleus Maleficarum (der Hexenshammer) petitioning higher authorities for license to persecute witches in Germany after the local clergy failed to champion his cause—signalling a rather dramatic shift in the Church’s attitude, having previously made a distinction between white and black magic and opposed the denunciation of supposed practitioners of either, restricting the punishment for transgression to confession, repentance and community service. Manifestly political in nature as a way of settling jurisdictional battles between priests in Mainz, Köln and Trier by installing, deputising his cadre (Henry Institoris) with more papal immediacy bypassing the established hierarchy. Recognising the existence of witches, the text of the bull began, and as a preface to Kramer’s own work, written during retirement when the directive to cooperate with inquisitions under pain of excommunication failed to garner support:

Many persons of both sexes, unmindful of their own salvation and straying from the Catholic Faith, have abandoned themselves to devils, incubi and succubi, and by their incantations, spells, conjurations, and other accursed charms and crafts, enormities and horrid offences, have slain infants yet in the mother’s womb, as also the offspring of cattle, have blasted the produce of the earth, the grapes of the vine, the fruits of the trees, nay, men and women, beasts of burthen, herd-beasts, as well as animals of other kinds, vineyards, orchards, meadows, pasture-land, corn, wheat, and all other cereals. These wretches furthermore afflict and torment men and women, beasts of burthen, herd-beasts, as well as animals of other kinds, with terrible and piteous pains and sore diseases, both internal and external; they hinder men from performing the sexual act and women from conceiving ... they blasphemously renounce that faith which is theirs by the sacrament of baptism, and at the instigation of the Enemy of Mankind they do not shrink from committing and perpetrating the foulest abominations and filthiest excesses to the deadly peril of their own souls ... the abominations and enormities in question remain unpunished not without open danger to the souls of many and peril of eternal damnation.

Despite the blurb, the Church condemned the publication as misleading and rejected the animosity towards independent women, though failing to do enough to staunch this apparent endorsement of witchhunts.

Fêted on this day in the Roman and Eastern Orthodox calendar of saints, Zephaniah (Σοφονίας, צְפַנְיָה, Concealed is god) was a priest of the Temple of Solomon during the reign of Josiah (circa 640 to 609 BC) counted among the Twelve Minor Prophets and credited as forecasting the coming of the Messiah, during a time when worship of other deities was popular and widespread, especially that of Baal and Astarte. The incipit of his book that warns of corruption and the imminent destruction of Jerusalem for its moral degeneration for its religious waywardness is the origin of the setting for the liturgical hymn as the sequence from the Requiem Mass—translated in the Vulgate edition of the Bible, “Day of wrath and doom impending!”

Regarded as a patron of the army and surely with significance to the Roman calvary garrisoned, an amulet bearing the figure of the prophetic king Solomon horseback and spearing a demon has been uncovered by an archaeological team excavating the site of Hadrianopolis (Edirne) on the Black Sea. The fifth century pendant bears the inscription “Our Lord has overcome evil,” with the obverse listing the archangels Azrael, Michael, Gabriel and Israfil. Though no artefact of this type has been previously discovered in Anatolia, the motiff was a popular one, eventually replaced by St George and the dragon in the Middle Ages, where as the former eventually meets his down fall by the devils he enslaved.

Via Fancy Notions, we are directed towards a quirky, creepy featurette that definitely has the look and feel of a silent work from the 1920s, an homage to the great puppet animator Władysław Starewicz and by extension, inspiration Tim Burton, but was only made in 1998. From studio Screen Novelties’ Seamus Walsh and Mark Caballero in this stop-motion animation—with fitting accompaniment—a weird little old man is captured by flying demons (the titular creatures based on an HP Lovecraft story) and taken to the goblins’ lair. Watching the cartoon was reminiscent of perennially viewing of Disney’s Halloween Treat and the inclusion of the 1929 Silly Symphony The Skeleton Dance but much better crafted and with a spookier soundtrack best left on repeat.
