flow country (10. 013)

One landscape that typifies the Highlands are the moorlands, the peat bogs that not only support a host of ecosystems, human activity and enterprise is referred to as the blanket bog as the advance of moss and lichens with the retreat of the last Ice Age some eleven thousand years ago but sequesters more carbon than the world’s woodlands combined. The ruins of the Moin House, erected as a refuge in 1830 for hapless travelers crossing the morass and from the Gaelic for moss, mรฒine, nicely frame the scenery with Ben Loyal (one the left and kiki) and Ben Hope (right, bouba).
